The form of the Tertiary Institution

The form of the Tertiary Institution is one of the structure higher education in Indonesia. The tertiary institution was the educational unit that held higher education and could have the shape of the academy, the polytechnic, the college, the institute, or the university.

  • The academy held the professional educational program in one branch or some branches of science, technology, or certain art.
  • The polytechnic held the professional educational program in several special knowledge fields.
  • The college held the academic educational program and/or professional in the scope of one discipline of certain knowledge.
  • The institute held the academic educational program and/or professional in a group of discipline of science, technology, and/or similar art.
  • The university held the academic educational program and/or professional in an amount of discipline of science, technology, and/or certain art.

The route and the Level of Education

How long you wanted to spend time in the classroom? As soon as possible? How fast? Apart from being determined by your capacity, this also depended on the route/the level of education that you took. Higher education in Indonesia knew two educational routes, that is the academic route (the level of the scholar) and the professional route (the level of the diploma). The academic route stressed the science command, whereas the professional route stressed the application of the certain expertise.

In connection with them with time, the level of the scholar needed long spare time (minimal 8 semesters) compared with the level of the diploma (2 semesters to D1 – 6 semesters to D3). This was certainly very influential to the cost that must be provided by you. Many people, who because of his limitations, more chose the level of the diploma in the hope that fast passed and received the work.

Must be known by you, the level of the diploma was drafted as the level of the terminal. Meaning that, the graduate was prepared to immediately enter the world of the work, not to continue his education to the higher level (although now there are those that were acknowledged as the program of the route passage, from the diploma to the scholar).

This was different from the level of the scholar, who opened the graduate’s opportunity to continue to develop the knowledge. Another thing that must be paid attention to by you was the level of the competition in the labor market. If many of the scholar’s powers that were available, the company will more give priority to them compared with the graduate of the diploma.
